Granular Energy approved as ESNA by Elexon

Granular Energy has been formally approved as an Exempt Supply Notification Agent (ESNA) by Elexon, following our Participant Approval Board meeting on 27 November 2025.

This approval marks an important milestone in our journey to support the UK's transition to transparent, traceable renewable energy supply. As an ESNA, we can now enable generators to supply power directly to consumers through License Exempt Supply (LES) arrangements, helping customers avoid major policy levies whilst supporting local clean generation.

Building on what we already do

For those familiar with our work, ESNA services sit naturally alongside our existing capabilities. We already process multiple terawatt-hours of metering data for hourly matching across numerous UK suppliers. The granular, time-stamped energy tracking that underpins 24/7 clean energy procurement is fundamentally the same capability required for exempt supply: matching generation to consumption at hourly resolution, with rigorous data integrity and regulatory compliance.

This close alignment with our core business means we can offer ESNA services at a very competitive price point. We haven't had to build extensive new functionality; rather, we've extended our proven platform to meet BSC requirements. Our existing infrastructure—including SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications, automated monitoring, and secure data handling protocols—already meets the stringent standards required for settlement processes.

What this means for the market

License Exempt Supply creates significant value for customers by enabling them to avoid Feed-in Tariff, Renewables Obligation, Contracts for Difference, Capacity Market, and Nuclear RAB charges. For large energy consumers paired with suitable generation, the levy savings can be substantial (close to £60 per MWh), potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of pounds annually.

But beyond the economics, exempt supply enables something more fundamental: direct, traceable relationships between clean generators and end users. This transparency is well aligned with our mission of accelerating the transition to a carbon-free electricity system.

Going live

We'll be going live with our first batch of clients in the coming weeks, beginning to submit License Exempt Supply volumes through the settlement process. This represents the culmination of months of preparation, testing, and regulatory engagement to ensure we can deliver these services with the same reliability and precision our clients expect from our certificate management and 24/7 matching solutions.
