Energinet, Reel and Granular Energy run pilot for five companies to try Granular GOs in Denmark
We’re thrilled to share news from our pilot project with electricity supplier Reel in Denmark, where five companies tested Granular Guarantees of Origin (GGOs) to document their renewable energy use with hour-by-hour precision.
Unlike traditional monthly Guarantees of Origin (GOs), GGOs are certificates issued for each hour of renewable production. This unlocks far deeper insights into when and where green electricity is actually generated, and whether it matches the times companies are using power. As Anders Engtoft Meldgaard, CCO of Reel, puts it: “GGOs bring that real-world connection to Scope 2 reporting, by allowing companies to document, hour by hour, how renewable their electricity consumption was. Just as PPAs address additionality, GGOs address accuracy.”
This level of precision is becoming increasingly relevant. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is revising its reporting guidelines, signalling that future requirements will demand time- and location-specific documentation for renewable electricity claims. In this pilot, industrials Genan, Baettr and three other Danish companies received GGOs matched to their usage on hourly, weekly, and monthly bases, allowing them to assess their electricity footprint in unprecedented detail.
Energinet, Denmark’s national transmission system operator, played a crucial role in this pilot by providing the registry infrastructure needed to issue and track GGOs. The Energy Track and Trace initiative is exploring how to support the introduction of GGOs to the market, enabling certificates to be matched on an hourly basis. Michael Gimm Holdensen, Product Owner of the Energinet initiative, said: “GGOs mark a new chapter in renewable energy certification. They could empower companies to align their reporting with real-time production, strengthening both accuracy and trust.”
Granular Energy’s platform played a role in enabling this pilot, integrating with Energinet’s registry to allocate GGOs seamlessly. “Creating a GGO scheme will enable energy buyers to gain further insight into the impact of their electricity procurement, by highlighting when they are powered by renewables,” says Bruno Menu, COO of Granular Energy. “Our software ensures utilities can smoothly allocate and report GGO matching to consumers.”
We are proud to support this evolution towards time-stamped transparency, helping companies drive real-world decarbonisation. As suppliers like Reel prepare to launch GGO-based products by 2026, Granular Energy remains committed to powering the future of energy data with precision, trust, and impact at its core.
