Renewable Exchange and Granular Energy bring hourly matched PPAs to market

Granular Energy and Renewable Exchange bring hour-by-hour clean energy accountability to PPA buyers.

Granular Energy and Renewable Exchange partner

Granular Energy and Renewable Exchange today announced an integration that brings hourly traceability to PPA contracts transacted on the Renewable Exchange platform. Buyers of bundled PPAs interested in this service can match their consumption with clean energy on an hourly-basis and make verified hourly-matching claims. This aligns with the requirements of the leading international standards, including the GHG Protocol, SBTi, EnergyTag, and the Climate Group's 24/7 Coalition reporting framework.

Robert Ogden, CEO of Renewable Exchange added “This integration is a genuine first for the market and proof of how Renewable Exchange innovates ahead of the curve. As clean energy accounting shifts from annual to hourly matching, we are building the infrastructure that makes it real, which reaffirms our place as the market's leading PPA platform.”

The integration removes the gap that has historically sat between PPA origination and credible hourly accounting. Generation data and REGO information from contracted assets flows directly into Granular Energy's platform, where it is matched to the buyers’ consumption at an hourly granularity and converted into auditable certificates. For generators and energy suppliers, it opens a new product category, hourly matched PPAs, that can be offered to buyers facing increasing pressure to evidence the quality of their clean energy claims. For buyers, this means access to hourly matching and reporting, aligning with most advanced corporate accounting requirements. Eligible UK participants can also seamlessly benefit from significant cost savings via the UK's Exempt Supply arrangements, taking advantage of Granular Energy's role as an Exempt Supply Notification Agent.

Toby Ferenczi, CEO of Granular Energy added “The market is moving from annual offsetting to hour-by-hour accountability, and buyers need their PPA contracts to keep up. Together with Renewable Exchange, we are making hourly matched PPAs a mainstream product, not a niche one. With hourly carbon-free energy matching, consumers can both reduce their electricity costs while helping to accelerate the transition to a carbon-free energy system.”

Bringing together Renewable Exchange's marketplace reach and Granular Energy's hourly matching infrastructure, the partnership establishes a new standard for what a PPA can deliver. As the GHG Protocol Scope 2 revision, SBTi and other standards move toward granular accounting, the market is shifting from annual offsetting to hour-by-hour matching, demonstrated by leading energy buyers that have already committed and in some case contracted hourly matched renewables - notably Google, AstraZeneca, Iron Mountain Data Centers, Shree Cement and AirTrunk. This integration gives more buyers access to hourly matching and reporting from today.

Renewable Exchange is the UK's first and leading PPA marketplace, bringing transparency, simplicity and efficiency to the Power Purchase Agreement market. The platform connects over 6GW of renewable generators with more than 30 offtakers, processing thousands of data points per site to deliver forecast accuracy of 4%. In 2025 alone, PPAs facilitated through the platform will deliver over £0.25bn of revenue for generators.

50 questions from the room: defending hourly EAC matching at the RECs Market Meeting

I argued for hourly matching in a room that remains to be convinced. They had many questions. That’s the reality of debating hourly EAC matching, and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. In a room where most of the audience prefers annual EAC matching, arguing the virtue and need for hourly wasn’t easy. I've done my best to answer the questions below, by topic.
