Building the digital backbone for energy attributes certificates: South Pole and Granular Energy partnership

Granular Energy is pleased to announce a new partnership with South Pole. This collaboration marks an important innovative step in renewable energy certificate management across global markets.

Granular Energy now provides climate consultancy South Pole with its full certificate management software. The tool, developed over the last four years to support the increasing complexity of the EAC (Energy Attribute Certificates) market, was built with guidance from world-leading energy suppliers. It spans from EAC risk management down to customer reporting. It allows users to:

  1. Enter and track EAC deals, with deal capture specific to EAC requirements, such as vintages or labels
  2. Connect and pull inventory position and transactions from local registries, enabling monitoring of the delivery of certificate deals and highlighting any mismatches
  3. Allocate certificates to demand, considering contractual demand requirements and certificate characteristics, such as expiration
  4. Report on individual EAC allocations to each customer, respecting a variety of standards and industry practices (GHG Protocol, RE100, 24/7 Coalition, UK GBC…)

A key enabler of this partnership is Granular Energy’s ability to integrate with South Pole’s registry accounts, bringing multiple systems together into one unified operating layer. This integration covers Evident, TIGR, NAR, NECS, ERCOT, OFGEM, and M-RETS, enabling South Pole to consolidate activity across registries, automate certificate movements, and maintain a single, coherent view of its global portfolio. This unified interface supports scalable growth as certificate markets diversify.

Thanks to Granular Energy’s certificates management platform, South Pole will benefit from enhanced operational accuracy and efficiency between portfolio management and trading, stronger risk mitigation, and a more consistent customer experience powered by automation and high-quality data flows.

Toby Ferenczi, Granular Energy CEO commented: “By combining South Pole’s global expertise with Granular Energy’s digital infrastructure, a more reliable and interoperable ecosystem for energy attributes is being built, one that reinforces confidence in market-based decarbonisation. Looking ahead, our support for South Pole’s services will continue, including exploring hourly matching, to align with upcoming changes to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the development of next-generation approaches to renewable energy procurement.”

Chiara Romoli, Renewable Portfolio Senior Specialist at South Pole said: “By partnering with Granular Energy, South Pole is strengthening the way we monitor and manage certificates across global markets, helping reduce delivery risk, streamline trading workflows, and increase operational accuracy – positioning us to meet evolving market demands, and reinforcing South Pole’s role as a leading global EAC provider worldwide.

Felix Wuentscher, Renewable Portfolio Manager - South Pole echoed: “South Pole and Granular Energy’s partnership demonstrates the impact that high-quality digital infrastructure can deliver: clarity, automation, and scalable growth.”

Carbon-Free Chronicles April 2026: The essential round-up of news and reports relating to hourly transparency

April brought the debate on clean energy procurement off the page and into the room. On 24 April, we co-hosted Next-gen Electricity Procurement with CMS in London, bringing together energy buyers, suppliers, and market participants for a morning of panels on Scope 2 reform, next-gen portfolio management, and the future of licence-exempt supply in the UK. The conversations were sharp, and the appetite for clarity on where the market is heading was clear. Beyond the event, April saw the emissions accounting debate intensify, new research quantifying just how much program design matters in carbon-free energy (CFE) procurement, the European Commission signalling its direction on time-based guarantees of origin (GO), and the UK's AI data centre energy planning revealing some uncomfortable contradictions. Here is what has been on our radar.
