UK news: Granular Energy is becoming an ESNA — powering the future of exempt supply
Granular Energy is in the process of registering as an Exempt Supply Notification Agent (ESNA) under the UK Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC). This move underscores our commitment to enabling transparent energy supply models. We believe exempt supply can empower traceable, direct energy relationships between clean generators and end users. Scaling it demands rigorous data integrity and close compliance with regulatory requirements—strengths at the heart of Granular Energy.

ESNA explained: the role and its impact
The ESNA role was introduced to support the growing importance of exempt supply models in the energy system. Under recent market rule changes, all License Except Supply applications must be routed via an ESNA.
The agent’s responsibility is to calculate, from half-hourly metered data, the volumes of electricity that are exempt from standard supply licensing, and to submit those volumes into central settlement systems. This ensures that exempt supply volumes are properly accounted for and that customers and generators can still access market-based entitlements under Capacity Market and Contracts for Difference regulations.
By stepping into this role, Granular Energy will provide a reliable, automated route to compliant exempt supply — one that integrates seamlessly with our existing platform for time-based clean energy matching.
Built for this role
The ESNA role is all about measuring and reporting clean energy flows accurately, half-hour by half-hour, for settlement purposes. It was introduced through recent regulatory changes to ensure exempt-supply participants can claim their rightful entitlements without distortion from legacy settlement limitations.
By design, Granular Energy’s platform already excels here: we track and match electricity generation and consumption at granular time intervals, delivering the precision and traceability essential for ESNA responsibilities.
What this means for you
With Granular stepping into the ESNA role:
- Suppliers and intermediaries will soon have access to a streamlined, settlement-ready service for exempt supply, with none of the complexity of building internal systems from scratch.
- Generators and consumers can unlock the benefits of direct supply arrangements while maintaining full regulatory compliance and access to market entitlements.
We’re building this service on top of the same infrastructure we use to deliver high-frequency, auditable clean energy matching, giving you confidence that every unit of energy is counted and tracked.
What’s next
We’re currently progressing through the ESNA registration and qualification process and will soon begin onboarding early partners.
If you're developing an exempt supply proposition or want to explore the possibilities, we’d love to talk.
