Granular Energy becomes accredited issuer of Granular Certificates under EnergyTag

Granular Energy is proud to announce our accreditation as an official issuer of Granular Certificates (GCs) under Configuration #3 of the EnergyTag standard. This milestone reinforces our commitment to driving the global shift to 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) by enabling trusted, auditable hourly matching of clean energy in regions where such tracking was previously unavailable.

Why this matters

Today, most clean energy claims are based on annual or monthly Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), which offer limited transparency about when renewable energy was actually consumed. This time mismatch undermines efforts by corporates, suppliers, and regulators striving for more rigorous 24/7 carbon-free energy goals.

That’s where Configuration #3 GCs come in. These certificates allow for auditable hourly tracking in markets where formal Issuing Bodies don’t yet offer sub-hourly or hourly certificates. It fills a critical market gap, ensuring that 24/7 CFE claims are verifiable, credible, and not subject to double counting.

What our accreditation enables

With this accreditation, Granular Energy can now:

  • Issue verified hourly GCs in regions lacking official hourly EACs, allowing energy buyers and sellers to participate in the 24/7 CFE transition globally.
  • Retrofit existing contracts, from PPAs to green tariffs, with time-stamped certificates that meet EnergyTag standards.
  • Enable compliance and leadership in sustainability claims, helping corporates align with upcoming regulatory shifts and investor scrutiny.

A foundation for global standardisation

Beyond a technical accreditation, this is a foundational step toward building a globally interoperable system for time-based energy tracking. By supporting EnergyTag’s Configuration #3, Granular Energy is helping set a precedent for trustworthy hourly claims in every market, no matter how advanced its current certificate system.

“24/7 carbon-free energy must be grounded in real data, not assumptions. Our accreditation ensures that every claim backed by Granular Certificates is backed by auditable proof. It’s about enabling a cleaner, smarter grid and the credibility needed to accelerate investment.”

We’re excited to work with our partners and the EnergyTag community to continue advancing hourly energy tracking and market transparency.

50 questions from the room: defending hourly EAC matching at the RECs Market Meeting

I argued for hourly matching in a room that remains to be convinced. They had many questions. That’s the reality of debating hourly EAC matching, and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. In a room where most of the audience prefers annual EAC matching, arguing the virtue and need for hourly wasn’t easy. I've done my best to answer the questions below, by topic.
