Granular Energy Partners with JERA Group to Pilot Hourly Renewable Energy Matching in Japan

Granular Energy has partnered with JERA Group, following a €1 million investment, to pilot hourly renewable energy matching in Japan, enhancing transparency and traceability in energy consumption for businesses aiming to meet carbon-free goals.

We are thrilled to announce a partnership with JERA Group, following a 1 million euro investment from JERA Ventures, to further our mission of bringing transparency to renewable energy management. As part of this collaboration, JERA Cross, a subsidiary of JERA, will pilot Granular Energy’s hourly renewable energy matching platform. This partnership marks a significant step toward enabling businesses in Japan to drastically improve traceability of their energy consumption down to a sub-hourly basis.

Our platform enables hour-by-hour matching of renewable energy generation and consumption, offering businesses unprecedented insight and traceability into their sourcing decarbonization efforts. With international momentum building around 24/7 carbon-free energy, this pilot project in Japan will provide JERA Cross clients the ability to visualize and certify their energy use for every hour of the day, helping them meet their green transformation goals.

The collaboration comes as global interest in hourly energy matching continues to grow, with upcoming changes to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol highlighting the need for more precise renewable energy management. Last month, Climate Group launched the 24/7 Coalition to guide energy buyers in their 24/7 carbon-free energy journey, led by members Google, Microsoft, AstraZeneca, Airtrunk, Vodafone, Schree Cement.

JERA Cross President & CEO Takao Miki expressed excitement about this collaboration, noting: “We believe we can further contribute to establishing a truly carbon-free society by collaborating, delivering, and building recognition of CO2 reduction with Dr. Ferenczi and Granular Energy. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to a carbon-free energy system, both in Japan and globally.”

Toby Ferenczi, our CEO, shared his excitement about the partnership: “We are delighted to be partnering with JERA Ventures and JERA Cross to help bring greater transparency to energy customers in Japan and accelerate the transition to a carbon-free energy system.”

We look forward to working with JERA to bring 24/7 carbon-free energy tracking to Japan. Together, we’re building a future where businesses have full transparency into their energy consumption, driving a more sustainable and accountable energy market.

Carbon-Free Chronicles April 2026: The essential round-up of news and reports relating to hourly transparency

April brought the debate on clean energy procurement off the page and into the room. On 24 April, we co-hosted Next-gen Electricity Procurement with CMS in London, bringing together energy buyers, suppliers, and market participants for a morning of panels on Scope 2 reform, next-gen portfolio management, and the future of licence-exempt supply in the UK. The conversations were sharp, and the appetite for clarity on where the market is heading was clear. Beyond the event, April saw the emissions accounting debate intensify, new research quantifying just how much program design matters in carbon-free energy (CFE) procurement, the European Commission signalling its direction on time-based guarantees of origin (GO), and the UK's AI data centre energy planning revealing some uncomfortable contradictions. Here is what has been on our radar.
